The use of biofertilizers is a more accurate method than the one of chemical synthesis, since it contributes to soil and environmental preservation. This kind of work has been developed at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (INCA) by means of obtaining EcoMic® and LicoMic® biofertilizers, Glomus hoi like stump, which implies several predictive toxicity assays should be performed, with the purpose of cancelling or minimizing the application of compounds, whose risk/benefit rate would be undesirable for society. Among the in vivo tests described for genotoxic evaluation, there is an assay for the sperm cell head abnormalities in mice. In order to evaluate the genotoxic potential of both biofertilizers, Cenp:NMRI mice were treated with three dose levels (20, 40 and 80 spores.mL-1) of eachproduct, besides a negative (Ringer solution in EcoMic® and osmoprotector solution in LicoMic®) and a positive control (Acrylamide 20 mg.kg-1 in both cases). Results from bothexperiments show that the doses evaluated do not significantly increase anomalous sperm percentage compared to the negative control. Likewise, there was not a statistically significant sperm quantity decrease compared to the negative control. It was concluded the two biofertilizers evaluated do not cause genotoxic or citotoxic effects on the mice´s germinal cells treated.
