The United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency, through its Biological Threat Reduction Program, contributed USD 3 505 221 to strengthen central and regional veterinary services in six targeted governorates in Iraq (Anbar, Al-Muthanna, Basra, Duhok, Ninawa and Wasit) by building veterinary staff’s capacities to detect, diagnose and rapidly report highly pathogenic animal diseases and by providing equipment to veterinary laboratories. Over the course of the project, FAO, in collaboration with its partners in the Government of Iraq, reached 1 605 people (1 338 veterinarians and 267 animal health workers, animal owners and livestock traders) through specialized training programmes and awareness workshops to achieve the project’s objectives.
