The effect of plastics and barley straw used as mulch on soil temperature and growth and yield of Peruvian commercial potato varieties was evaluated during the winter and summer seasons (1975-1977) in the arid, isothermal environment of La Molina. During the winter, the temperature of the soil covered with black and white plastic sheeting ranged between 18 and 25°C. Under these conditions, potato yields increased for most varieties. In the summer, the plastic covers raised the temperature above 30°C, hindering plant growth and tuber formation. The soil covered with straw maintained an optimal and stable temperature (below 21°C) for potatoes during the winter. In the summer, the straw tolerably reduced the soil temperature during the day, but in the car it always remained above 20°C. The yield with this treatment during the summer only reached 48% of the winter yield. The results indicate that although the soil temperature is reduced by using straw, the change is not sufficient for the potato to grow well in the summer.
