Vanilla is a member of the orchid family cultivated for its flavorful fruits used extensively as a food and beverage flavoring globally. Papua New Guinea grows the Bourbon and Tahitian varieties, with the latter accounting for 80% of production prized for its unique flavor and aroma. Vanilla is grown in agroforestry systems across Papua New Guinea, especially in East and West Sepik provinces. The labor-intensive processing involves curing the green beans through several steps like denaturing, sweating, drying and sorting to develop the distinctive vanilla flavor. In 2022, Papua New Guinea exported around 278 tonnes of cured vanilla beans worth over $18 million, primarily to Indonesia, France and the United States. The factsheet identifies opportunities to develop policies and standards to facilitate trade, establish eco-friendly processing by farmer groups, and promote domestic consumption of vanilla in food products.
