The livestock sector in Zimbabwe is severely impacted by the effects of the frequent and rising number of disease outbreaks These include diseases such as foot and mouth disease ( Newcastle disease, and theileriosis, now affecting most parts of the country Some of these challenges are faced because the Department of Veterinary Services ( is under resourced, and there are inadequate policy and regulatory frameworks to support field staff These challenges impede increased productivity of good quality products, access to markets and trade opportunities, and sustainable growth and development As a result, Zimbabwe has continuous huge imports of animal products, such as milk, commercial hatching eggs, tallow, poultry meat and fish, rendering local products uncompetitive on the market and threatening the viability of the livestock sector.
