Coarse grains prices have sharply increased and are expected to stay high, given that production has decreased and supply will be limited in the whole western Sahel region during marketing year 2011/12. The estimated number of food insecure people is put at three million. International agencies are concerned over a serious food crisis which is affecting yet some 10 million people in the whole Sahel region. The major drivers behind the critical food security situation are the extensive drough t which affected production and the current fighting in northern Mali between secessionist groups and government militias. The government is assisting the population with the support of the international agencies through delivery of food and non food-items.
