Mozambique has been particuarly impacted by the 2023–2024 El Niño, with central and southern regions experiencing unprecedented dry spells and below‑average rainfall. The combined impact of El Niño, pests and irregular rainfall has led to the loss of almost 690 000 ha of crops, affecting over 3.27 million people. To mitigate the impact of drought on vulnerable households by restoring agricultural livelihoods and enhancing resilience, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has received a contribution of USD 500 000 from the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium, through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities. This support will enable FAO to improve the food security and nutrition of 7 250 households, approximately 36 250 people, and help safeguard the livelihoods of communities that are heavily reliant on rainfed agriculture.
