Environmental peacebuilding, in practice and in theory, goes beyond the challenges presented by natural resources in conflict and considers the environment an asset for peacebuilding and other sustainable development goals. This poster highlights three concepts from this field that can be applied in the context of forestry.
The first is a conceptual framework for environmental peacebuilding. Natural resources and the environment can pose risks across the conflict lifecycle, but also offer opportunities for preventing, addressing, or recovering from conflict. This framework can empower practitioners and researchers to identify these various linkages and understand implications for their work.
The second is conflict sensitivity. Environmental and development programs or interventions are not conflict neutral. There are certain best practices that can be applied at all stages of a project to promote conflict sensitivity. The third is natural resources and the environment as an entry point for dialogue and cooperation. At many scales (local, regional, transboundary, etc.) and depending on context, forests may offer an opportunity for dialogue and cooperation.
Forestry practitioners and researchers can learn more about environmental peacebuilding and access diverse resources in various ways, including by visiting the Environmental Peacebuilding knowledge platform and joining the Environmental Peacebuilding Association.
