El cafeto es una planta originaria de Africa e introducida a Colombia en el siglo XVIII. Por las favorables condiciones climáticas y de suelos, su cultivo prosperó en el territorio nacional bajo un esquema de caficultura tradicional, con la ventaja de no encontrarse por muchos años ante factores limitantes para su crecimiento y producción. Durante ese período se describieron una docena de enfermedades causadas en su mayoría por hongos, que por su naturaleza local y ocasional no requerían prácticas exigentes para su manejo. El desafío que se presenta es generar oportunamente el conocimiento científico para mejorar la calidad fitosanitaria de los cafetales, buscando un mayor beneficio para el caficultor, para el medio ambiente y, especialmente, para el consumidor.
Coffee plants originated in Africa and were introduced to Colombia in the 18th century. As a result of the favorable weather and soil conditions, their cultivation prospered in the national territory under a traditional production scheme, with the advantage of being free of limiting factors for growth and yield during many years. During that period a dozen diseases were described, caused mostly by fungi which, because of their local and occasional nature did not require demanding management practices. The challenge ahead is to generate the scientific knowledge needed to improve the sanitary quality of coffee plantations, looking for a grester benefit for coffee growers, consumers, and the environment.
