Family farming comprises diversified agricultural systems and preserves traditional food products, contributing to both balanced diets and the protection of the world’s agrobiodiversity. The promotion of sustainable agriculture through the safeguarding of family farming is important for the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as food security and poverty reduction. This is particularly true at a time when the world faces increasing pressure to provide sufficient, affordable and nutritious food for a growing population, while coping with climate change and the degradation of natural resources. Japan recognizes the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) approach as one of the most effective tools to promote family farming, given that most farms in Japanese GIAHS sites are family farms. Indeed, following their designation as a GIAHS site, family farmers are able to conduct a wide range of actions for dynamic conservation. The project therefore aimed to support international activities for sustainable family agriculture through the GIAHS programme.
