Currently, Yemen depends heavily on imports in order to meet its seed planting demands This is especially prominent for seed in the vegetable sector Existing seed production in the region is limited and does not exceed 20 percent of the seed market This narrow production in the region accounts for only a few local vegetable varieties, cereals, forage crops, pulses and potatoes Farmers also currently grow low yielding traditional produce and rely on inadequate agricultural practices that result in the production of lower quality, high cost crops.
