The tree cover in livestock farms in Rio Frio, Costa Rica, was characterized and related to level of farm intensification. Eighty-seven percent of the farms had live fences and 95.7% had trees in pastures. Two groups of cattle farms were identified: farms of high intensification (specialized milk farms) and farms of low intensification (beef, dual purpose and mixed farms). Variables such as the stocking rate, pasture size and amount of contracted labor negatively influenced the total tree cover (primary and secondary forest and forestry plantations) on the farm. It is concluded that in the Rio Frio study area, the intensification of farms reduces overall tree cover, diminishing the forest area and the reducing tree density of pastures and live fences
