The Issues: Animals meet an estimated 30 per cent of human requirements for food and agriculture in the form of meat, milk, fibre, fertilizer for crops, fuel and draught power. Animal genetic resources are a global asset, currently undervalued, underused, misused and underdeveloped. 30 per cent of remaining animal genetic resources are at risk of loss. As genetic diversity erodes, our capacity to maintain and enhance animal production, productivity and product quality decreases, as does our ability to respond to changing conditions. Genetic resources hold an important key to increasing food security and sustainable agriculture. The Plan of Action: To prevent further erosion of irreplaceable genetic resources. To increase our knowledge of what remains of these resources. To better develop and make use of domestic animal diversity. The Global Strategy for the Management of Farm Animal Genetic Resources offers an international action plan led and coordinated by FAO’ s Initiative for Domestic Animal Diversity.
