This paper updates the regular reviews of the state of the fish stocks, based mainly on statistics for 1988. The introduction refers to the increase in the world fish production, draws attention to major changes noted in specific fish stocks, and considers the status and problems facing the oceanic high sea resources. The rest of the document provides a review of the state of the stocks in the main FAO statistical marine and inland areas.
