Samples of detrital aggregate (N =43) were collected from three habitats (stream, backswamp, lake) and two substrata (benthic and periphytic) in the Sepik-Ramu system to assess their potential food value for detritivorous fishes. Compared to other aquatic systems where detritivorous fishes thrive, the detrital aggregate samples from the SepikRamu were as high or higher in key nutrients (digestible organic matter, protein, total amino acids). Habitats and substrata differed with lower food qualit y in streams, high food quality in the backswamp and highest food quality in the lake. Detrital food resources in the backswamp and lake appear to be fully adequate to support rapid growth and good health of detritivorous fishes.
