Resumen

Descripción

The effect of PEG-1000 (polyethylene glycol) in controlling wood shrinkage was determined using 11 tropical wood species. Treatments were cold soaking for 2, 4, or 6 weeks followed by blast drying of the green wood (Program 1) or by a combination of air drying and blast drying (Program 11). The result varied considerably with the species used. The optimal reduction in shrinkage was obtained with a 4-week soak, although cracking could be controlled with a 2-week treatment. Drying Program 1 can be used with species with a basic specific gravity less than 70; moderate Program II should be used with denser woods. Staining and discoloration, as well as bigroscopicity, can be controlled by manipulating the process and by properly selecting the finishing system.
