The ninth fact sheet in the Save and Grow series presents the key points of maize agroforestry for the smallholder. Maize production is increased when it is grown under nitrogen-fixing trees such asFaidherbia albida, an African acacia species. Planting leguminous coppicing trees, such as Gliricidia sepium, is another way of increasing maize production sustainably. In areas where land holdings are larger than 1 ha, growing leguminous shrubs such as Sesbania sesban on fallow fields is another option for revitalizing the soil and increasing maize yields.
