Descripción
Bananas is one of the most important agricultural crops in Africa and is grown for food security and to sustain the livelihoods of millions of people. This, however, can change abruptly once Fusarium wilt TR4, widely considered as a critical plant disease of regional and intercontinental significance, spreads on the continent. Fusarium wilt TR4 was detected in northern Mozambique where it devastated commercial Cavendish banana farms, and later on Mayotte Island off the east African coast. There is thus a real risk that the fungus may spread to neighbouring countries or be re-introduced into Africa.
The Plant Production and Protection Division (NSP) of the FAO, with its strong connection with international agricultural organisations, plant protection institutions, academia and government entities, is well-positioned to organise the first conference on banana Fusarium wilt in Africa. The conference will significantly expand the FAO`s past and ongoing involvement in banana research and development in Africa and help protect the continent against a prominent food security threat.
