Up to 95 percent of farms in the Republic of Albania are small, semi subsistent and often informally operating smallholdings (family farms) Smallholders often lack the knowledge to apply the good agriculture practices needed to reach minimum food safety standards, and have limited managerial skills and economic literacy Low mechanization and a lack of interest among the younger generation to engage in farming also contribute to the challenges faced by the sector At the same time, the more viable family farms are faced by the challenge of modernizing production methods and increasing productivity, while preserving as far as possible the benefits of intact agrobiodiversity and natural resources as their added value Most smallholders also lack negotiating power when they sell their products directly to consolidators and processors, as favourable market structures are not in place or are only partially developed.
