Resumen

Descripción

What remains of Nigeria’s natural tree cover is being rapidly depleted. In support of government commitments to tackle this concerning trend and restore the country’s forest landscapes, the World Bank’s Programmatic Advisory Services and Analytics programme on Climate Resilience and Environmental Management (CREM PASA) supported an analysis of the drivers of tree cover loss, focussing on agriculture as the leading driver of deforestation and woodfuels as the main driver of forest degradation. The Federal Government of Nigeria has made ambitious commitments under both domestic policies and international conventions to turn the situation around, aiming not only to halt the removal of tree cover, but also to restore forest landscapes for a more sustainable, prosperous and climateresilient future. This report investigates the leading drivers of tree cover loss in the country and identifies strategic interventions to support these aspirations.
