Assessment of the adoption of improved cowpea varieties and production technologies among farmers in Kano State, Nigeria

The study assessed the adoption of improved cowpea varieties production technologies of farmers in Kano State, Nigeria. Data were collected using Open Data Kit (ODK). Multi-stage sampling procedure was used for the study. A total of 309 respondents out of 1551 cowpea farmers were randomly selected. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed an overall adoption level of 93.85%, in which IT99K-216-24-2 was the highest adopted variety with about 30.75% adopters, the result of probit regression of the factors influencing the adoption of improved cowpea varieties encompasses marital status (p<0.10), household size, and membership of organization (p<0.05), farm size, extension visit, and access to credit (p<0.01). While the tobit regression result of the factors influencing the intensity of adoption of improved cowpea varieties encompasses house hold size, membership of association, extension visit, On-farm income, distance to seed source (p<0.05). Farm size, and price of seed (p<0.01), The major challenges faced by these cowpea farmers that hindered their adoption were high costs of inputs (94.82%), unstable market price (87.37%), inadequate capital (84.46%) and shortage of land (82.20). In conclusions, farmers who adopted improved cowpea varieties have experienced tangible benefits in terms of increased cowpea productivity and higher yields compared to the traditional varieties. The study recommends that government and relevant stakeholders should provide subsidized agricultural inputs to lower production costs and encourage the sustained adoption of improved cowpea varieties, while also promoting wider access to quality improved cowpea seeds across the State.
