This paper has the objective of describing briefly the food animal industry in the U.S. from an economic perspective so as to aid in the subsequent identification of critical research needs relating to production, marketing and distribution. It focuses on beef, pork, lamb-mutton and poultry meats produced from human consumption. In addition it considers two other major animal product food sources, dairy products and eggs.
