dc.descriptionThree Meloidogyne javanica populations (MJ-1, MJ-2 and MJ-3) collected from Theobroma cacao, Nicotiana tabacum and Stachytarpheta jamaicense at different localities of Costa Rica, were characterized morphometrically and the reaction of nine differential hosts, inoculated with them, was also recorded. Significant differences among populations were found in total length, head length (from the base of the telorhabdions to the outer surface of the stoma), distance between the dorsal esophageal gland orifice and the base of the telorhabdions (D.E.G.O.), tail length, maximum body width (M.B.W.), anal body diameter and the proportion alpha of second stage larvae, stylet length, M.B.W., D.E.G.O., and spicules (chord of arch) of males, and stylet length and D.E.G.O. of females. Differences were also noted among populations in some characteristics of the female perineal patterns.'Florunner, peanut, “Delta Pine L-16' cotton, Puerto Rico” sweet potato and “Tioga strawberry were not whercas 'NC-95' tobacco, *All-Gold” sweetpotato and Minnesotta A-401 corn were good hosts for the three populations. 'California Wonder' pepper as a good host for Mj-2, fair for Mj-3 and bad for Mj-1. "Charleston Gray watermelon was a good host for Mj-3 but fair for Mj-1 and Mj-2 The reproduction rate of M. javanica was variable not only among populations on a given host but among different host inoculated witb the same populations.
