Agriculture sustains about 70 percent of Rwanda’s population, yet declining soil fertility threatens food security and rural livelihoods. Despite efforts like crop residue recycling and biomass transfer, soil degradation continues.This policy brief examines the urgent need for improved soil fertility management tailored to Rwanda’s diverse soils and cropping systems. It stresses the importance of accurate soil analysis, harmonized fertilizer recommendations, and strengthened research and extension services. The brief also highlights the critical role of private-sector involvement in ensuring a reliable fertilizer supply chain.Drawing on recent data and expert insights, the publication offers actionable recommendations to reverse soil degradation and boost agricultural productivity. It serves as an essential resource for policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners committed to sustainable agriculture and national food security in Rwanda.
