dc.descriptionWith the global population expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050, agriculture must tackle hunger and malnutrition in the face of growing pressure on natural resources, a loss of biodiversity and the uncertainties of climate change. By applying ecological and social concepts and principles, agroecology can guide the transition to more sustainable, efficient, equitable and inclusive food systems. There is growing evidence of the positive impact of agroecological approaches on the environment, economy and society at large, but the data remain fragmented, hindering effective decision-making. FAO plans to work with its partners to harmonize data collection and help scale up the use of agroecology to rehabilitate degraded lands and protect biodiversity, while realising the needs of food and agriculture for a growing global population.
