Resumen

Descripción

This document describes the update of soil suitability procedures used in the Global Agro-Ecological Zoning version 5 (GAEZ v5). The update was necessitated by and is directly related to the release of the Harmonized World Soil Database version 2.2 (HWSD v2.2), which specifically updates HWSD v2.01 (through HWSD v2.0). The HWSD developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA) is especially intended for applications in biophysical models and agro-ecological assessments. In the present update of soil evaluation procedures, two broadly distinct farming systems were used: (i) conventional farming systems as previously covered by the GAEZ v4 agroedaphic procedures; and (ii) adapted procedures for organic farming systems, a first step towards enabling a GAEZ assessment for spatially explicit potentials of organically produced crops.
