Twenty-four Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli and X. phaseoli var. fuscans isolates, obtained from different countries and isolated from different host plants (Phaseolus vulgaris and P. lunatus, among others), were compared with nonpathogenic isolates of Xanthomonas using the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique. Genetic variability of the 2 bacterias causing common bacterioses in beans was verified as well as their difference with nonpathogenic isolates. The usefulness of the RFLP technique in epidemiological and ecological studies of pathogens is highlighted. (CIAT)
