This guide suggests that artisanal fish landing sites may not be the optimal location for fish processing due to the high levels of fish spoilage and waste. Instead, the recommendation is to carry out further processing of fish within the community environment, where the burden of fish processing can be dispersed over a larger area, particularly in rural settings, where income generation and daily livelihoods depend on fish. Nevertheless, to maintain food safety standards in urban settings, it is crucial to have a contained fish processing environment. This approach highlights the importance of taking a community-based and context-specific approach to fish processing, considering both economic and health-related factors.
