Active forest management activities such as forest restoration and fuel reduction thinning treatments continue to produce large amounts of small-diameter wood and biomass residues that are often not efficiently utilized. Methane, nitrous oxide, and ammonia emissions from livestock feedlots can be a significant contributor to total greenhouse gas levels. Increases in both forest restoration thinning and feedlot size provide an opportunity to develop a new integrated bioeconomy that will use small-diameter wood residues for bioproducts that are required by sustainable agricultural industries. Bio-based animal bedding and adsorbent products (i.e., sawdust) made from woody biomass can improve animal health and reduce leaching, runoff, and associated water contamination. Additionally, a mix of animal waste and sawdust can be collected to produce high-value organic composted fertilizers that improve agricultural soil productivity in a sustainable manner. We will present data on the productivity and cost of producing sawdust from small-diameter hardwood and softwood using a track-mounted sawdust machine. The logistics of sawdust production operations and transportation to livestock sites will be discussed. In addition, we will provide data determining the quality of sawdust as a bedding material such as moisture content, particle size distribution, and bulk density.
