The Five Freedoms are principles developed in 1979 by the Farm Animal Welfare Council of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island to outline the basic needs of all animals and provide guidelines for their proper care. Housing plays an important role in meeting the Five Freedoms. Proper housing ensures that animals have access to food, water, and shelter, and that they are protected from discomfort, injury, and disease. Housing can also provide opportunities for animals to engage in natural behaviours and interaction with other animals within the species. Provision of good housing allows animals to graze, nest, roost, and move around freely, which promote their welfare and health.
