The Pacific Islands face a unique series of challenges, including high exposure and vulnerability to weather extremes and heavy reliance on imported food. In 2021, such challenges were exacerbated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its containment measures. The cross-border restrictions created significant economic challenges and affected vulnerable households' livelihoods and food security. Many Pacific Island Countries could no longer rely on tourism – the leading economic sector – to generate income. In response to global food supply chain interruptions, many countries had to shift reliance from imports to local supplies and food. Furthermore, access to international emergency support to reduce the risk of community exposure to COVID-19 was limited.
Despite such challenges, in 2021, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations implemented multiple emergency projects in the subregion, reaching 11 233 households in the Cook Islands, Fiji, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. FAO helped communities to respond to and recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as natural disasters including tropical cyclones Harold, Tino, Yasa and Ana. Support was also provided after the Mount Yasur volcano eruption in Vanuatu.
This publication gives an overview of the emergency and resilience activities implemented in the Pacific Islands in 2021.
