Rice cultivation faces multiple challenges, including declining arable land, water scarcity, labour shortages, and greenhouse gas emissions. These challenges call for innovative, resource-efficient, and climate-smart solutions to sustain productivity and reduce the environmental footprint of rice systems. Ratoon rice offers a promising pathway toward these goals. Recent research and field experience in China, Viet Nam and Bangladesh show that mechanized ratoon rice can achieve annual yields of up to 16.1 tonnes per hectare — approximately 60–70 percent higher than single-season rice — while cutting labour and input use by half. The technology also reduces greenhouse gas emissions by about 33 percent per unit of yield relative to double-season rice and provides significant income and food security benefits.Despite the rapid development of ratoon rice technology, awareness of its benefits and potential among decision-makers, agricultural extension workers (AEW) and farmers in the region remains very low.The project aimed to enhance productivity, resource-use efficiency and climate resilience in rice-based systems in China, Viet Nam and Bangladesh by developing and scaling up mechanized ratoon rice technologies in these countries, through training, demonstrations and field exhibitions.
