One of the significant challenges in tropical pasture-based livestock production systems is ensuring year-round forage availability to meet animals’ nutritional demands. Generally, this environment exhibits a seasonal forage growth pattern, being vigorous during spring and summer and significantly reduced during autumn and winter. In this context, the intercropping of grasses and legumes, mainly Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) in Brazil, has emerged as a promising strategy (Pezzopane et al., 2024), due to the grazing pattern that allows forage biomass to accumulate during productive months, to be consumed during periods of forage scarcity (Furtado et al., 2023). Additionally, the adoption of silvopastoral systems (SPS) is also increasing as a strategy for pasture-based livestock production in the country due to several environmental benefits (Brunetti et al., 2025). However, the understanding of legume forage production under grazing in SPS remains limited, particularly in systems with native trees. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the forage biomass production of pigeon pea intercropped with Urochloa brizantha cv. BRS Piatã is in a SPS composed of native trees.
