Since 2017, the Sudanese Wildlife administration has been working closely with local communities and the RESSOURCE Project to conserve the incredible wetlands in the Khor Abu Habil Inner Delta. This collaboration is bearing fruit. On 10 April 2022 the site was designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Ramsar designation can help strengthen protection and management of a site, and open the door to scientific studies, funding opportunities, tourism, and poverty alleviation initiatives. The RESSOURCE Project played a key role in this designation, supporting national bird counts, undertaking socio-economic surveys, and organizing the participatory consultation process to define the Ramsar site boundaries. The RESOURCE Project, which stands for "Strengthening Expertise in South Sahara on Birds and their Rational Use for Communities and their Environment", aims to improve the sustainable use of natural resources, particularly waterbirds. This Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations-led initiative is working at wetland sites in Chad, Egypt, Mali, Senegal and Sudan. The RESSOURCE Project is part of the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme, an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Paci¬c States, funded by the European Union and cofinanced by the French Facility for Global Environment and the French Development Agency.
