Descripción
Agricultural drought in Papua New Guinea refers to extended periods of insufficient rainfall and water availability, leading to adverse effects on crop production and livestock. This condition can result in crop failures, especially for sweet potatoes and taro, contributing to food shortages and decreased food security. Drought also leads to water scarcity, affecting both drinking water sources and agricultural irrigation. Livestock productivity is reduced due to limited pasture and water availability. The Anticipatory Action Protocol for agricultural drought aims to guide the government and partners to systematically monitor the likely impact of the hazard and use forecast information to trigger specific anticipatory actions, which are designed to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
