| dc.description | Under Vision 2040, Oman plans to reduce the crude oil sector’s share of the gross domestic product, through an increase in the contribution of fisheries and aquaculture. To achieve this target, the country will need to improve the technical and fisheries management capacities of government staff, improve the monitoring of the fisheries sector and the quality of data, strengthen sustainable management of national fisheries resources, facilitate private sector investment and technological advancement, improve the quality and diversity of fisheries products, reduce post-harvest losses and exploit Oman's considerable aquaculture potential in an economically and environmentally sustainable manner.In collaboration with the World Bank, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) is currently preparing a long-term strategy for the fisheries sector which will help confirm the key areas where interventions are needed. Regulation of legal fishing activities and prevention of illegal fishing activities are key to strengthening the sustainable management and exploitation of national fisheries resources. Oman’s vessel monitoring system (VMS) was installed in 2000 and is no longer up-to-date and only allows vessel position fixing with a four-hour delay. The Government wishes to upgrade the system to give real-time information, expand it to cover small outboard motor powered fishing skiffs and integrate the data generated from the system with those of other government agencies. The MAFWR, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), launched this project to modernize Oman’s VMS. The initiative aimed to upgrade monitoring technology, improve compliance mechanisms, enhance enforcement capacity, and engage stakeholders across the fisheries sector. | |
