In Zambia, access to modern and clean energy is currently very low, with only 31 percent of the population having electricity and a notable gap between the 67 percent in urban areas and 4 percent in rural areas. Furthermore, only 17 percent of the population uses modern, clean energy for cooking. The Government of Zambia recognizes that sustainable energy services are essential for broader national development goals, such as education, public health, clean water, food security, women's empowerment, and climate change adaptation and mitigation. National policies that advocate for renewable and alternative energy sources include the Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative, which aims for universal electrification by 2030 and is supported by both the Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP) and the National Energy Policy (NEP, 2019).
