Through a strategic partnership with the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has implemented a comprehensive multi-country initiative to strengthen animal health systems and reduce biothreats posed by devastating transboundary animal diseases (TADs). This project addresses the growing threat of TADs and zoonoses by investing in national capacities to detect, prevent, and respond to biological threats at source across Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia.The initiative focuses on three priority diseases: African swine fever (ASF), foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), and peste des petits ruminants (PPR), which collectively cause billions of dollars in annual losses and threaten the livelihoods of millions of people worldwide. Key interventions include supporting risk-based surveillance, enhancing laboratory diagnostics, and training frontline veterinary professionals in field epidemiology.
