Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing continues to be a major global threat to the long-term sustainability of fisheries and the maintenance of productive and healthy ecosystems, as well as the stable socio-economic condition of many of the world’s small-scale and artisanal fishing communities, which depend on oceans for their livelihoods and as a source of food.In 2018, FAO launched the public version of the Global Record of Fishing Vessels, Refrigerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels. Its aim was to contribute to the prevention, deterrence and elimination of IUU fishing, while its anticipated outcome was increased transparency and traceability of vessels’ operations (identification, activities and compliance) and fish products (legality and traceability of their origin).
