Charcoal is a significant cooking fuel in Uganda, particularly for urban populations. In addition, the charcoal value chain is a livelihood source for many people, underscoring its importance in meeting energy needs and role in socioeconomic development. Charcoal production in Uganda is however predominantly unsustainable – and is associated with contributing to deforestation, environmental degradation, and greenhouse gas emissions. The project worked across three major areas: improving forest management best practices for charcoal production; improving efficiency of charcoal production and reducing emissions of greenhouse gases; and enhancing the institutional and policy framework to support clean energy.
