Heifer International’s work to transform food systems is grounded in the idea that regenerative agriculture – especially sustainable livestock – can raise incomes while restoring the natural resource base communities depend on. Achieving this at scale requires more than strong technical solutions; it demands interventions that fit local realities shaped by gender, age, farm size, market access, services, and social institutions. A recent impact report with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, based on 425 producers across Catacamas, Dulce Culmí, Juticalpa, and San Esteban, provides a practical opportunity to translate “context matters” into an evidence-based approach. The findings confirm that core strategies, such as farmer field schools (FFS), promotores, and local entrepreneurship, can improve productivity and reduce environmental pressure, but results vary sharply by municipality. This brief uses the rural-to-remote (rural–urban) gradient to frame the four municipalities as three archetypes – peri-urban, intermediate, and remote – and shows how context-driven design can strengthen adoption, resilience, and long-term impact.
