Achieving sustainable development that leaves no one behind is a global challenge. Small-scale fisheries (SSF) are vital for livelihoods, food security, poverty eradication and sustainable resource use but have received limited attention. SSF communities face multidimensional poverty, unequal power relations and competition from large-scale fisheries and other sectors. Often remote, they suffer from poor access to markets, services, education and face environmental threats that limit their ability to claim rights and secure resources.Fisheries governance has typically focused on large-scale fisheries, rarely addressing the needs of SSF communities. A holistic approach rooted in SSF realities is essential for sustainable development and poverty reduction. This project supported the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines)1, endorsed by the FAO Committee on Fisheries in 2014, through four components: raising awareness and policy support; strengthening science-policy links; empowering stakeholders and institutional capacity; and supporting collaboration and monitoring.Working with governments, SSF organizations, civil society and partners, the project targeted Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean, focusing on ten countries chosen for their SSF importance and potential for scalable impact. Activities also responded to demand in other countries.
