Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are one of the basic foods in Brazil, even though cultivation of this legume is not easy in the predominantly acid, tropical soils. In most cases, the adverse effects of acid soils on legumes cannot be attributed to the H-ion concentration itself, but rather to some indirect effect such as a deficiency of calcium, magnesium or molybdenum, or to the toxic effects of soluble aluminium and manganese 1 12 17 21 Investigations on the exchangable manganes.
