The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations commissioned a study of the potential in the Papua New Guinea fisheries sector based around a comprehensive review of the sector. The study was also tasked to assess the constraints facing the sector, look at the development opportunities, and make projections of growth in the sector based around individual fisheries, vessel types, catch categories, processing and marketing, and employment, technical and financial services, ensuring in the process that the plan projections harmonize with PNG's fisheries policies on sustainable development, resource management, training and human resources development, development of coastal fisheries, development and domestication of the offshore tuna and other fisheries, and international cooperation. In carrying out these tasks, the consultant was asked to keep in mind and ultimately make recommendations on measures and steps that should be taken by the PNG National Fisheries Authority to st rengthen its capacity in the field of fisheries sector planning.
