| dc.description | The background paper provides a synthesis of the literature on the impact of climate change on maize production and markets in the Eastern and Southern African (ESA) region. The region relies heavily on rain fed agricultural systems and climate change is expected to have significant impacts on agricultural productivity and food availability. Given the importance of maize for human and animal consumption, the paper reviews the current and potential impacts of climate change on food and nutrition security (FNS) and discusses policy instruments currently in place to deal with FNS and climate change. Finally, the paper examines innovative climate smart approaches and suggests that governments should provide support to smallholder farmers, in particular, on the uptake of such approaches. | |
