Around the world, 828 million people go to bed hungry, and millions more lack access to nutritious diets. At the same time, global agrifood systems, responsible for feeding over 8 billion people, contribute nearly 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing these dual challenges requires a transformation of agrifood systems, focusing on resource-efficient, sustainable, and climate-smart agriculture that enhances food security and nutrition while reducing environmental impact. Science, technology, and innovation (STI), including nuclear and isotopic techniques, are critical in driving this transformation. These techniques provide risk-informed, evidence-based solutions for improving crop yields, optimizing soil and water management, enhancing animal health, and ensuring food safety. They also support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to poverty reduction, food security, and health. In October 2023, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launched the Atoms4Food initiative. This program aims to strengthen global food security by utilizing nuclear and isotopic techniques across seven tailored services, including crop variety improvement, soil and water management, animal production, food safety, pest control, and nutrition enhancement. Atoms4Food fosters more efficient and sustainable agrifood systems through integrated research, technology transfer, capacity-building, and cross-border collaboration. By aligning with national development priorities and SDGs, the initiative provides targeted, country-specific interventions to combat hunger and malnutrition. Through innovative partnerships and scalable solutions, Atoms4Food aims to enhance global food security and promote sustainable agricultural practices for a healthier, more resilient future.
