Located in the eastern part of Niger, Diffa region is a vast semi-arid expanse, where the balance between agricultural and pastoral activities is being disrupted by new competition for natural resources and also by conflict between indigenous livestock farmers and transhumant pastoralists. The report features the main findings of the conflict analysis that was carried out to: (i) take stock of conflicts over transhumance; (ii) identify initiatives for conflict prevention and management; and (iii) formulate proposals to improve the effectiveness of conflict prevention and management mechanisms.
The conflict analysis is one of the main activities implemented under the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) project “Strengthening the resilience of cross-border pastoral and agropastoral populations in priority areas in the Sahel”, which is funded through the FAO-European Union Partnership Programme under the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC).
