Descripción
The Ministry of Fisheries, Government of Mauritius, made a request through the UNDP, Mauritius to the Indian Ocean Programme (IOP) to provide the assistance of a statistician to advise on the establishment of a statistical system which would produce reliable estimates of catch and effort and thus enable the Ministry to monitor and manage the marine fisheries of the country. Accordingly, the IOP instructed the author to visit the country with the terms of reference “to advise on the setting up of a statistical system in respect of marine fisheries in Mauritius”. The author was in Mauritius from 1 November to 16 November and the present report and recommendations are based on his discussions with various officials of the Ministry and representatives of some fishing companies, as well as on his visits to various landing centres in the country. Appendix I gives the list of persons met by the author during his stay at Mauritius.
