The agriculture sector plays an important role in the economy of North Macedonia, accounting for nearly 10 percent of the gross domestic product ( on an annual basis, a number which rises to 16 percent when the contribution of the food processing industry is also included Almost half of the population lives in rural areas, with nearly one fifth of the work force employed in agriculture Historically, agriculture has served as a shock absorber during times of socio economic and structural changes in the industry Similarly, the agrifood processing industry also plays an important role in the economy of North Macedonia Over the last ten years as the industry has become increasingly privatized, agrifood processing has suffered from political changes and difficulties in adapting to the market economy Hence, support is required for the recovery of these sectors and the establishment of a market oriented focus A central role for the agrifood sector is highlighted in the National Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development 2014 2020 ( More specifically, the NSARD envisions the development of the poultry industry so that it both meets the domestic demand for eggs and enters into the poultry meat market, which has been dominated by competitive imports from other countries in the region, the United States of America and Brazil.
