The Ilha Grande Bay (BIG) is one of the richest biodiversity areas in Brazil, and is identified to be economically important for the country’s fisheries, aquaculture, mariculture and tourism. To preserve and make sustainable use of the BIG Ecosystem and its terrestrial and marine biodiversity, the project aims to support the creation of an enabling environment, institutional arrangements and public support directed at two critical threats to the system: organic pollution from urban waste water and solid wastes associated with recreational marinas. Through the development and implementation of a pilot Integrated Ecosystem Management approach in the Bay, the project created a good basis for the achievement of the general objective. Based on the evidence collected throughout the evaluation process, the final evaluation drew several conclusions and recommendations to FAO and other stakeholders.
